Development and Validation of a “Health Index” or “Rating System” for the Built Environment

Pillar 3
Resilient/adaptive built environments

Need

Development and validation of a “health index” or “rating system” for the built environment (similar to that used for energy efficiency in building design) that rates the risk of infection. For example, a Platinum rating would mean the risk of acquiring an infection by working in the building would be 10% or less.

Proposed Solution

We will develop a system to rate the risk of infection within built environments similar to industry measures of building efficiency.  The proposed solution is an industry accepted “health index” rating for buildings that identify the percentage risk of infection according to various tiers or levels.  As developed, this system will help reduce the risk of disease transmission.

Statement of Work

A range of empirical measures to develop a building health index will include quantitative microbial risk assessments with state-of-the art anti-microbial technology.
